Today marks the first anniversary of my own #selfhosted little #fediverse instance! 🎉

Like a lot of folks, I joined the Fediverse in late 2022 with an account on mastodon.social, before finally deciding to leave behind the endless drama of Big Instance Life for good, and set up my own.

I followed @jroquet's very sound advise (thanks again! 😄 ) and turned to @gotosocial's great implementation, which turned out to be the exact shape of what I was looking for: easy to install, lightweight and low maintenance.
One year later, I can add to the list that it's also been been rock solid, with regular, painless updates, so kudos to the team and contributors!

And now that I think about it, that makes it two years since I started my #Friendica instance. I've been on the #Fediverse for much longer of course (including other #ActivityPub apps I've hosted here such as #Akkoma and #Firefish ), but still, happy #Fediversary to me!

Our Fediverse instance at https://social.chinwag.org came online on December 18th, 2017! That’s eight whole years ago today!

Chinwag has been (and is) the umbrella for many services, but this one’s definitely our biggest and most important. It’s been a super fun time and we’ve got more fun to come!

The timing of our birthday puts it at a fairly busy time of year, so we never quite seem to have the time to do anything really as special as we’d like, but there should be a new update before the end of the year to look forward to, and 2026 is looking quite promising, but we’re not going to start making promises just yet!

Please enjoy a nice piece of cake with us today, and have an excellent time doing whatever you’re doing!

Three years ago, I hesitantly signed up on my first instance on Fedi and staggered out onto the social media stage for the first time in my life. Why I chose Mastodon for this, is more of a why not, than a why. It was during the great Twitter wave and I'd read a few things about it and it seemed like a good a place as any.

The first thing I did was search the hashtags (even I knew to do that) for my autistic brethren. From that day to this, I have not been disappointed in what I found. Either in the welcome, or the sense of community. Or even, possibly, that I've never come across a bigger bunch of weirdos, misfits and malcontents in all my life (😆) And yet you have all found a place in my heart.

I have learnt and grown so much by being here and continue to learn and broaden my understanding of not just autism, but so much else because of you all. For this and for so much more, I cannot thank you all enough. All of you who make up the Fediverse and who make this such a special place.

Oh, yeah, it's my #Fediversary today. As far as I can tell, anyway, because my first toot on Hachyderm, where I started, was posted exactly three years ago.

(Minus two hours, but I can't be arsed to wait)

It was about the fact that my existing display name, 'Sindarina, Finder of Edge Cases', did not fit into the default 30-character limit. This forced me to come up with 'Sindarina, Edge Case Detective', which I have used ever since, and which is, in my opinion, better in every way.

About half an hour later, I fulfilled my contractual obligation to post at least one (1) Emperor's New Groove GIF upon joining a new platform.

I ended up moving to 'mastodon.lol', and then here when the .lol admin ragequit, but it really has been the best social media experience I have had so far.

Thank you all for making it awesome, especially my neighbourhood of mutuals, and everyone who posts great #AltText 💜
