Two days ago, the National Catholic Reporter published an editorial statement about Trump's "big, beautiful bill," noting the strong opposition to it among Catholic religious women (i.e., nuns) in the US, and the diffident opposition among the US Catholic bishops.

"This bill is not only a political and economic scandal; it has become a test for U.S. Catholic bishops."

As Randall Balmer has for some time now reminded us, the alliance of the US Catholic bishops with white Southern evangelicals predates the arrival of abortion on the scene as a major issue. That alliance began with opposition to the civil rights breakthroughs Democrats ushered in for people of color in the 1960s.

Ryan Burge parses the data about the 2024 election and finds:
"The Catholic vote is clearly a Republican vote now."
But attributing the growing Catholic vote for Republicans (white Catholics have for some time voted GOP, but now non-white Catholics are moving in that direction) to the abortion issue is a red-herring, since "the share of Catholics who are truly pro-life is not that large."
