A question for my FOSS-interested friends out there!

Some friends and I have been talking about alternatives to Discord, for...reasons.

We're aware of two potential alternatives currently, namely mattermost and matrix.

Each has their good stuff, but they lack some of the functionality we're seeking. Somewhat cosmetic, some of it, but important for the community we want to build.

So: does anyone know of a Discord-like FOSS project that incorporates:

- encryption
- bios/profiles
- pronouns
- channels of some sort
- possibly voice or video chat?
- accommodation for plurality
- no degree in computer-touching required for use (other than admin)

I don't know if such a thing exists, just casting out a hook and seeing if there's a nibble.

When I first came to Mastodon--specifically, on the #Fosstodon instance--I had already abandoned Xitter (the X makes a "sh" sound, like in Mandarin pinyin) for Bluesky, and I didn't think mastodon was ever likely to be my platform of choice--not enough normal people, too techie-focused, likely to be an echo chamber.

I was very wrong about that. I've been slowly realizing that over the course of months, but today I had an important realization, and perhaps discovered a useful metric.

Unless #fosstodon replaces their admins and racist moderators, they will remain blocked by us.

This is how we build a community that is inclusive to all, and most importantly, trustworthy. If you are serious about protecting the vulnerable, fucking PROVE it.

Little PSA: If you or your project has social media accounts hosted on #Fosstodon, you should really pay attention to what's going on right now and consider moving.

If things continue as they are, there's a good chance they're going to start getting blocked by LGBTQ+ and other minority-friendly servers across the Fediverse. I'm not going to go into why. There are plenty of other people posting long threads with receipts that you can go read. But if you want to stay connected to those people, I suggest migrating before connections are severed.

Just a quick update: I still intend on continuing Fosstodon and taking over admin tasks from @kev and @mike, together with some volunteers (more help is always welcome!). I spoke with K&M yesterday, they're very supportive of this. We have a longer meeting planned later this week.

I was a mod here a few years ago, so I have some insight in how things work. I'd like to keep things as is. I hope everyone will stay a bit longer while we work this out! 😊

I'm looking for a big, sustainable instance with reasonable rules. Preferably focused on free software. Preferably Mastodon. Self-hosting is out of question. What do people use?

I know of #FlossSocial, but @mycorrhiza is there already, and I don't want to have two accounts on one instance.
