"For example, I think Google [NZ] pays out about 95-97% of all the revenue that it earns [in "service fees" to the parent company] ... and FaceBook would be very similar, Uber would be. The percentages vary, but it's most of it, in all cases."

#Uber has now started doing this insidious thing where they show a longer route to calculate a higher fare, but then use a much shorter route *immediately afterward* for the actual trip. 😠

The app doesn’t let you contest the fare & doesn’t let you connect to a human. 😡

What a massively sleazy company Uber is -- see this breakdown of how it profits by systematically screwing drivers and riders.

Take a taxi, if you can still find one.

@dangillmor I have the impression that #Uber works out quite well for customers as well as drivers in #Brazil. The drivers appear pretty happy with their work.

My first book is out in paperback! I shared some thoughts on ROAD TO NOWHERE now that it’s been out for a few years, and despite what I might have worried when I was writing it, it remains as relevant as ever.

🚨 The paperback version of ROAD TO NOWHERE is out today!

Silicon Valley promised it would make transport better for everyone; their initiatives delivered nothing of the sort, while delaying real solutions.

Insane.

I’m reading the book by Marietje Schaake.

She mentions Uber’s Greyball program.

I had almost forgotten about it.

‘Once [Uber’s] software had spotted users close to law enforcement offices, the user was promptly served a different, tailor-made experience in a parallel app named Greyball… this made it nearly impossible for those users to get a ride.’

PSA: A popular #Uber scam in Barcelona is to accept your ride, independents and taxi drivers, say they can’t come, and ask you to cancel, earning them 8€.

While I sipped my morning coffee this, uh, morning, I thought that there should be a free, user-owned, open source alternative to Uber and its ilk. (Because fuck them.)

Naturally I promptly discovered that I'm far from being the first person to think this.

There's a nascent little app called Compañero that does just that. It's actually a Telegram bot, so doesn't require a download (if you've got Telegram).

Read about its small-town beginnings: https://companero.io/about

Two mobile phones displaying the Companero app with a chat message saying: "You can specify your own price in local currency... but if you can't afford to pay click the Free Ride button.")

The UK’s top food delivery firms— #Deliveroo, Just Eat and #Uber Eats—have signed the Greater #Manchester Food Delivery Charter to improve road safety. In partnership with GMCA, TfGM, police, and fire services, the charter sets safety standards for couriers using bikes and e-bikes. It promotes legal, responsible riding, realistic delivery times, and the reporting of injury collisions. As demand for delivery rises, this initiative supports Greater Manchester’s Vision Zero goal to eliminate road deaths by 2040. Regular ‘days of action’ and enforcement by police will ensure compliance. Companies will also educate couriers on e-bike safety and collaborate with public agencies to enhance safety measures for both riders and the public.
