it's not just you, ~everyone fucking hates bright LED headlights

@davidgerard I'm regularly anoyed at headlamps like 500m away from me. From my apartment, on the forth floor!
@davidgerard
1. Mandate more old fashioned amber color from headlights.
2. Mandate minimum light source area.
3. Mandate a height range (above road), and also distance range to edge of vehicle silhouette.
@davidgerard and every single one who has LED-lights tells me "no, mine aren't the problem. My car has this automatic that turns them brighter when there is no traffic and turns th down when there is traffic."
- Yes, that's also the fucking problem. This adjustment-stuff doesn't work properly, you f*ing i*t!
@davidgerard I will add my own personal little rant about other bicycle riders coming towards me with insanely bright LED lights worn on their heads of all places, directed parallel to the ground and straight into my eyes, instead of at the ground in front of them. so, yeah, *everyone* hates LED lights.
@davidgerard the solution is clearly to remove all cars.
@davidgerard (that's not sarcasm the world wo uld be so much better without everything being centred around cars so much)
@davidgerard I wonder if part of the problem is that now SUVs are so popular, beam heights are greater.
Blinding LED headlights are such a glaring example of why “if it is not a problem for me, it is not a problem” always turns out to be a problem for us all.
@davidgerard got blinded while walking home yesterday. By a taxi idling on the other side of the road 🤬
It's unsafe for everyone: Drivers and pedestrians. And worse when it's those jacked-up American utes.
@davidgerard (and let's not mention the ebikes, also a problem)
@davidgerard these are compounded by how tall cars are now, specially the yank tanks for mostly dudes with insecurities, worse is Chinese taking the cues and building much cheaper clone tanks with leds only and no auto follow steer/levelling etc.
@davidgerard I wonder how many accidents and deaths have happened due to blind drivers
@davidgerard Huh, maybe they are all optimized for right-hand traffic or something? (Yes I know they have different setups, I can even change mine in a menu)
I love my car's "matrix LED" lights and I don't have any problems with other cars.
Apart from those fuckers who put illegal LED aftermarket bulbs in H7 headlamps, they can fuck right off
@davidgerard it should be added to MoT and NCT and car should be failed. Manufacturers are charged the bill for installing them in the first place
#mastodaoine
I'd be better with 'em if the truck-nuts and retired fucks that all moved here in the last 5 years would stop running them on high, including fog lights and the stupid electro-strips across their hoods.
And #Tucson reduces light pollution so each car is like an explosion of light coming at you.
The truck boys are also now lighting their rear plate area and fucking wheel wells, intentionally blinding and polluting because they're all horrible, terrible, awful people inside. 😊
@davidgerard Thanks for sharing the article. It's not just affecting other drivers. I was walking a side street yesterday and the oncoming vehicles headlights blinded me to the point I could not see the sidewalk in front of me. Bonkers side range and intensity.
@davidgerard They are even worse on the oversized vanity pickup trucks.
@david_chisnall @davidgerard If you're riding on unlit cycle paths in the countryside at night you *need* a bright light pointing in front not down if you want to go any faster than walking pace. On my previous bike I could nudge the front lamp to point left and down with my thumb, thus providing a "dim headlights" switch.
@david_chisnall @davidgerard I often walk when it’s dark and those extremely bright and straight forward headlights on bikes actually hurt. So I’ve recently bought a headlight of my own, so that I can light my own way when an oncoming cyclist blinds me with theirs. Strangely enough, they seem to find that annoying, judging from the murmuring when they pass.
@david_chisnall
You mean bikes as in bicycles, right? Good thing is that you can call to them that their light blinds and they should tilt it downwards. Though, here in Germany, most cyclists ignore me calling them, but not all. @davidgerard
@martinrust @david_chisnall @davidgerard That's odd. Many UK cyclists buy German-made lights because they are made to a standard intended not to dazzle, which the others available in UK aren't.
@davidgerard There was a study released this year that indicated for places where the specific direction of the brightest bit of beam is controlled, some car companies were deliberately providing modified headlamps for testing, to pass the tests even though the actual cars on the road would fail, knowing it was fraud.
@davidgerard yup. https://mastodon.social/@idropyou/115419372771747952
I've been wearing yellow safety glasses to correct the color temp some and it does help. Still, it really is awful. I just bought a new vehicle and the lights are bright, but still can't see shit with them. My 10yo car with halogen bulbs is way better.
@davidgerard Forward-facing vehicle lamps need to be less blue and more green-orange.
@davidgerard I swear as a trains person I always see car people who supposedly love driving going on about how much it sucks. This just seems to be one of the ways in which it manifests.
@davidgerard Oh, god, I ran across the worst possible version of these damn LED headlights. The car had really bright but very focused tiny little lamps on them such that if you were coming at it head on you got blinded but if the car was *behind* you then you could barely see it in the dark because the directed spots they used as headlamps were focused elsewhere.
"Luckily" it was mostly behind me, though I thought the car had forgotten to turn their headlights on for a while.
@davidgerard They are crazy... It shouldn't be allowed to be like this. They totally blind you as the oncoming traffic.
