took me a long time to appreciate that not everybody grows up around firefighting/EMS

but man… yea, just don't screw around with fire. be prepared for it (your local FD has info about that too)

I cannot strongly enough urge you:

* Know your escape routes (NOT exits). Especially in new buildings. Evacuation maps are legally posted for a reason, often next to the elevator (because an elevator is NOT a reliable escape route)

* Have smoke detectors and keep them operational.

* Own a fire extinguisher. Know how to use it. Your local FD can train you in actual operation of it. Keep it somewhere you can get to in seconds, in the kitchen. Check it regularly. Own multiple if you have other likely sources of fire in your home.

* If you have gas utilities, know where the gas shutoff valve is.
