Wearing a red baseball cap in public these days, REGARDLESS of any text, is like wandering around Berlin in 1933 wearing a red armband with some sort of black symbol in a white circle. Either you're a Fucking Nazi, or you're happy to be mistaken for a Fucking Nazi.

@cstross @zip the co-opting of the socialist red makes for confusing branding overseas. Then again, Europeans weren't that much into wearing baseball caps. So Labour, Social Democrats, etc. are safe.

@cstross I just feel bad for the Linux software company Red Hat. Sure, their hat has always been a fedora, not a baseball cap, but I'm sure they can't help catching an occasional stray bullet.

It must be annoying to try to build a brand for a couple of decades only for some new thing to tarnish your reputation.

Quite illogical, of course. Until recently.

@cstross I’m a typical baseball cap wearing American guy, the cap i used to wear was for the team i support showing a curly white ‘W’ on a red cap

While I haven’t tossed those, they are no longer worn. Had to pick other options.

I have a 2000AD t shirt with a picture of Torquemada and his classic slogan "Be Pure Be Vigilant Behave" which I love because it sums up the fascist bait and switch so well.

I wore it out once and suddenly realised that I was in the middle of our beautiful multicultural city wearing a T Shirt with an angry looking Ku Klux Klan guy on it and that zero people were going to get the irony.

It stays in the back of my airing cupboard now.

@cstross except baseball caps have a practical use and armbands don't. So it's entirely possible that someone throws on the hat they can find to keep the sun out of their eyes, while it's highly unlikely that a 1930's German just couldn't find a better strip of fabric to squeeze their bicep.

@Vincarsi You don't need a logo on your headgear to keep the sun out of your eyes. Indeed, most hats *don't* feature lettering.

@cstross red baseball caps which have been worn as clothing for decades with our without slogans and insignia of all sorts of organisations (and still are), have become suddenly fash and it's just like wearing an armband which has no purpose other than to identify an individual with a specific designation?

Is this your own rationale or merely a comment on what total idiots are saying?

A red cap is a red cap, sure is not smart to wear that in this day and age, but it’s also the responsibility of everybody to use there brain before drawing some stupid conclusion.
P.S : and yes I know that the swatiska was used in the Celtic/Teutonic culture as well and mr.H probably took it from there.

I genuinely can't tell if this is satire. Liberals make up so many rules, it's hard to tell.

Red hats are extremely common, red arm bands are not - this is an important distinction that's been omitted. Most are not MAGA-related.

I'm not going to judge someone based on the color of their hat. Or any other reason, aside from what they say or do.
