Important to recognise all the hard work that goes into getting these fabulous autumn colours.

My friends, in these difficult times we are going through, we desperately need your help, kindness, and generosity. Please help me by donating to buy a tent to protect us from the harsh winter cold coming. Perhaps $5 or $10 doesn't mean much to you, But it means a lot to us
We are thrilled with the renewed attention that The Carpentries has received for deciding to withdraw a $1.5 million proposal to the National Science Foundation (NSF), thanks to a recent similar decision made by the Python Software Foundation ( @ThePSF) and the shout-out they gave us when they announced it.
PSF raised $65K+ within 24 hours of making their announcement, an amount which rose to $135K+ within a week in solidarity funds from 1400+ donors and 270+ new members. This is incredible financial support to PSF from the Python community!
The Carpentries has an open appeal to our community and the general public for donations and sponsorships to help us make up the shortfall in funds due to our proposal withdrawal. We are deeply grateful for the encouragement and solidarity we received in response. We value all contributions!
Our choice came with financial challenges. In the context of our operating budget ($1.2 million in 2024), $1.5 million is a significant amount of money. The loss of those anticipated NSF funds, therefore, represents a substantial impact on our sustainability.
With this renewed attention to values-based decision making, we would like to use this opportunity to highlight The Carpentries' continued need for financial support. We hope that Python community members and like-minded organisations will also support the work of The Carpentries in some way.
The support the Python community has shown to PSF for its decision has given us hope in the sustainability of open science communities. Please consider extending your generosity to our organisation’s fundraising efforts, and help us to reach more individuals that are aligned to our mission and values: https://carpentries.org/support/

🎉 100 backers! We're ~€8,000 away from our first goal of €30,000 for maintenance.
Campaign perks include a limited-run, hand screen-printed piece by Rocco Lombardi, the artist behind Bonfire's visual world. There's also a regular print for a lower price, available in more locations.
Rocco's work embodies what we care about: living worlds, connection, plurality. Our aesthetic embraces "contamination" and renewal: away from sterile platform design.

On November 11, 1887, four anarchists were hanged, after being found guilty of murder of a cop in Chicago's Haymarket Square, though the prosecutor admitted that they were actually tried for being anarchists.
Bonfire Social 1.0 is live! A federated, community‑first social network built on the modular Bonfire toolkit, and it’s only the beginning.
It's time to go beyond microblogging and build apps for community organising, open science, mutual aid, and collective decision‑making. Let's take back the internet with open protocols, consent‑based governance, and portability by design.

I just pledged at the Community level. This project is one of many that is about taking back control of our online spaces. Remember the Promise of the Web!
There's all good news on the Dutch government front looking into using #FOSS alternatives for their own services and #OpenSource projects.
@janvlug just published a blog post (in Dutch) on how @developer is considering #Forgejo code forge, the #git forge software that #Codeberg host for more than 200k people, serving more than 300k repositories.

Also follow @Gina updates on Dutch government plans, and participate in the discussions and polls. 💪
So UK unemployment has risen to 5%; the highest level in 4 years, with a dramatic increase in youth unemployment.
Yet the government seems to believe economic salvation lies in LLM-based so-called AI (statistical best-guess vending machines) whose main selling point is enabling companies to do away with the entry level posts where employees used to learn how a business works and the skills to progress.
Is anyone in Westminster capable of joined-up thinking? (rhetorical question...)

Reviews and prices for these things are all over the place. Anyone have a recommendation?
