Next Bandcamp Friday is this upcoming Friday - March 6. I've been grabbing a thing or two since the last one in because I couldn't wait for a few things.. But I do love giving artists all the money, and I'll be grabbing at least a thing or two on Friday. Have plans to grab anything of your own?

Package manager magic files and where to find them: https://nesbitt.io/2026/03/05/package-manager-magic-files.html
@andrewnez this is magnificent, thank you
@glyph @benjamineskola Part snark, part honest question:
Does it really matter what the code looks like or how it’s organized when machines are the ones reading and writing the code?
@ramsey @glyph @benjamineskola
if we had AGI it wouldn't matter, but we don't, and LLMs are a dead end towards that goal.
A lot of pro-LLM arguments hinge on what I tend to call "weaponized science fiction", a dangerous trap to fall into.

3/3 I can understand very small firms, who are work saturated or just don't have resources to filter junk calls etc.
But Intertek is a truly gargantuan GLOBAL firm. To have nobody answering the phone is a conscious choice - a deliberate decision. And I think it is the wrong decision.
@nielsa I've seen basically two types of users. 1, people who bought the hype and are trying really hard to get it to do stuff. 2, people who are marginally qualified for their position trying to use it to appear competent.
I've seen a few from group 1 slowly figuring out that it's usefulness is limited and nowhere near as useful as they thought. I've not seen that realization from group 2.
Boardgame nerds of the fediverse. Recommend me good boardgames that work for upto 6 players? Ideally something that doesn't take several hours to setup and explain the rules.
not quite a board game, more like a charades game
but have enjoyed Dixit
Ok there is something a bit fucky going on with read(2) on MacOS Sequoia 15.7.4 - it slows down dramatically when the number of bytes requested to read goes above about 2047KiB.
I wonder if I can reproduce this in C code? Job for tomorrow. Or maybe I’ll just limit reads to 1MiB and call it good enough…
Or maybe this is just more Rust fuckery
⚛️ Claude is an Electron App because we’ve lost native // Tonsky
「 These days, though, native is as bad as the web, if not worse. Consistency is basically out the window. Anything can look like anything, buttons have no borders, contrast doesn’t exist, and neither do conventions. Apple, for example, seems to place traffic lights and corner radius by vibes rather than by any measurable guidelines 」

#hagel
Hint: es ist komplizierter als man denkt. Hier die Erklärung.
https://scilogs.spektrum.de/fischblog/physik-klimawandel-treibhauseffekt-funktioniert/
Also honestly requesting good use cases for *generalized* LLMs. Do you know of any? What am I not seeing?
inb4 anything code-related.
@nielsa LLMs can sort of do most things transformers can do (cos they're transformers), but they're much more convenient and accessible to the public
e.g. mediocre translator, mediocre OCR, mediocre transcription
M5 Pro and M5 Max are surprisingly big departures from older Apple Silicon https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2026/03/m5-pro-and-m5-max-are-surprisingly-big-departures-from-older-apple-silicon/
It's awards season! I couldn't be more proud of the two books I published last year. "Automatic Noodle" is my love letter to San Francisco's future. The anthology "We Will Rise Again" is a hopeful collaboration between me,
@older, Karen Lord, & many brilliant authors. I'm also incredibly grateful that I'm able to continue publishing weird, queer, hopeful science fiction about resistance & community. Thank you to everyone who worked on these books, and to everyone who read them!!!
Reading about Oxytocin, Cortisol, Estrogen and Testosterone interactions, running into a link to autism (a studies found lower oxyticon with people in autism and that increasing it can help with social interaction).
It's a lot of data with some areas really poorly researched and a complex field with bidirectional interactions. Very interesting, somewhat frustrating to dive into...
@dmehers RUN HE IS BEHIND YOU
@craiggrannell aaah don’t do that to me!
@fucinafibonacci @mora @mariosiniscalchi @internet lavoro nell'ambiente della tecnologia, so quanto è preziosa.
All the details on the two new Studio Display models:
https://www.macstories.net/news/apple-introduces-two-new-studio-displays/
@viticci Hmm. I think video professionals are more likely to go for the Asus 32” 4k OLED from what I hear. Colour accuracy > resolution.
The plain IPS studio display is disappointing. Asus, BenQ, others do 27” 4k with colour that’s about as good, often better refresh rates, more ports etc, for much less money. I don’t see a justification for the premium.
